INSIDE OUT EXERCISE

I took an existing script and did a scene without watching the movie and then I compared! I chose a scene from Inside Out where Joy meets Bing Bong. (I have seen this film, but like 1000 yrs ago)

Comparison:

Here’s the version before watching the original scene: https://youtu.be/EQM6jyhRW4c
And here it is again, but after:

And here’s the original scene, that I’ve found on youtube: https://youtu.be/Nhv-u4VFNSI?si=L1By6jfGRi0_uY0_

General weaknesses and fixes:

The timing and tempo: The original is 20% faster and not because it’s cut like a tiktok. It’s the crisp voice acting, animation and good shot selection ofc! So I cut mine down by 10sec - I was able to find some gaps!

Character tone: Joy was way more excited and, you know, joyful, so I changed mine to match better. And Bing Bong is less unhiged, but I like my crazy version of Bing Bong, so I kept it.

Framing: I did not look at any environments, so I wouldn’t spoil myself, I only looked one at one picture. And therefore my framing was VERY flat, because I didn’t have a library of elements (in my head) that I could use to frame the characters.
And after looking at the original I was dying of shame. (im ok now) So I fixed some of the shots. And now it looks great.

Shot choice: Overall it was kinda similar. BUT, when it came to the dialogue, mine was all over the place. And original had a very simple formula: the length of the shots are gonna get shorter (from long shot to close up) until script hits the most important line and then the shots go back to long/mid length. So I did mine in the same way - just left the long shots for comedic porpuses.
